Inconsistent connection to iPhone

I have a 38 mm sport band watch. The watch doesn't always connect to my iPhone 6. I periodically have to manually connect watch to my phone about weekly. I do this by turning blue tooth on my iPhone 6 off and on again, then the watch connects. It this typical or should the iWatch remain connected if my iPhone is on and within range?

Hey wellib!

Glad to have you here in the Apple Community. So your Apple Watch is intermittently losing connection to your iPhone 6? There could be a couple reasons why it can be happening. If it occurs in a specific area, then you may have some interference affecting the connection. If it is occurring randomly in different environments, un-pairing and re-pairing may do the trick. Try the steps in the links below for some great troubleshooting tips.
